At Humber and the University of Guelph-Humber Library, we help build community for Black-identifying students. We provide spaces, resources and services that can help you succeed. Check out some of our reading lists and library spotlights to find the latest and greatest books on a variety of topics.

Featured Database:

  • Black Thought and Culture
    • Contains non-fiction writings, letters, speeches, essays, leaflets, periodicals, and interviews by American Black leaders, including teachers, artists, politicians, religious leaders, athletes, veterans, and entertainers.

Featured Journals and Magazines:

  • The Black Scholar
    • The Black Scholar has firmly established itself as the leading journal of Black cultural and political thought in the United States. In its pages African American studies intellectuals, community activists, and national and international political leaders come to grips with basic issues confronting Black America and Africa.
  • Black Maple Magazine
    • Online magazine maintained by art historian Charmaine Nelson with a focus on Black Canadian art, community, culture, and history, including academic as well as popular content.
  • Ebony  
    • Ebony provides positive images for blacks in a world of negative images and non-images. It was founded to project all dimensions of the black personality in a world saturated with stereotypes. 

  • Essence 

    • Essence is the premiere lifestyle, fashion and beauty magazine for African American women.

  • Toned
    • An online magazine committed to amplifying the stories of Black Canadians at the intersection of race, art and culture.

  • CBC Curio
    • Contains educational videos from CBC and Radio-Canada that celebrates the achievements of Black Canadians and reflects on the stories, experiences and accomplishments of Canada's Black community. 
  • Criterion On-Demand - Black History Collection
    • View movies and documentaries on Black History curated by Criterion. 
  • Kanopy
    • Enjoy award winning documentaries and films with curated collections such as Black Cinema, Race and Class, and more.
