February is Black Heritage Month — a time to learn about, honour and celebrate the legacy of Black Canadians. The theme for Black Heritage Month 2025 at Humber is Roots & Rhythms: Celebrating Black Culture, Creativity, and Community.
The Library is celebrating Black Heritage Month in a variety of ways! Here is a list of what is happening during the month of February with the Library:
1. Visit the Pop-up Library at the North campus for the Black Heritage Month Opening Ceremonies. We will be showcasing books from our collection by Black authors and have some blind date with a book options! You can also visit the Idea Lab and Archives table for other fun activities.
2. Enter for a chance to win in our Toronto Black Film Festival GIVEAWAY! Check out our Instagram page for more details on how you can win two ALL-ACCESS PASSES to the festival (Feb 12-17).
3. RSVP to our event Lit in the Library: Exploring Black Voices - No Pre-Reading Needed. Books, vibes, and Black excellence 📚✨ Celebrate Black Heritage Month with our Pop-Up Book Club! No pre-reading, just good convo, snacks, and a chance to win a gift card✊🏽(RSVP here)

4. Take a break and relax in both the North and Lakeshore library by joining us to complete a Black art jigsaw puzzle!
5. Read a book from our curated collection for Black Heritage Month.
6. Check out the Black Student Library Guide for Black students! This guide provides links to new books, movies, magazines, Black-owned Toronto organizations, business and more. This guide has a specific focus on people of African and Caribbean descent in Toronto and in Canada. It also includes materials on histories of colonialism, slavery, anti-Black racism and resistance.
7. Laser Cutting at the Idea Lab (Get Certified!) Black Heritage Month Edition! Come make a custom laser-cut afro pick, a symbol of Black Pride and identity, and get certified to use the Idea Lab's Glowforge at the same time. Space is limited. Register to secure your spot! Friday, Feb 21 at 1pm-3pm (Lakeshore Idea Lab G306 - G Building, 3rd Floor).
