What is a Repair Cafe?

A repair café is a community event where people bring broken items from home (e.g. bicycles, clothing, small appliances, electronics, etc.) to be repaired by volunteer fixers. The goal is to reduce land waste, promote reuse, and bring awareness to other sustainability initiatives like the Right to Repair

Why are we doing a Repair Cafe at Humber?

Benefits for students, employees, and community members:

  • Community Connection: Strengthen ties with Humber and the broader community.
  • Experiential Learning: Gain hands-on experience and valuable skills.
  • Sustainability Contribution: Support environmental stewardship, social responsibility and reduce waste.
  • Skill Development: Enhance problem-solving, critical thinking, and leadership abilities.
  • Collaboration: Work alongside professionals and peers from diverse fields.

Student fixers will:

  • Apply practical skills in real-world settings.
  • Develop problem-solving, critical thinking, and leadership abilities.
  • Collaborate with professionals and peers from diverse fields.
  • Contribute to sustainability efforts, aligning with Humber's commitment to environmental stewardship.

Participating in the Repair Café is a wonderful way to engage and learn about sustainable practices, while getting your well-loved items fixed along the way ðŸŒ±ðŸ”§

Volunteer as a Fixer

Are you handy and like to tinker?

A fixer is a volunteer who loves taking things apart and putting them back together again. Do you have experiences and skills mending clothes or jewelry, repairing household items, small appliances, bikes or computers? Or, are you interested in learning to repair these items?

Join our Fixer Team as a Fixer, or an Apprentice-Fixer and help our community by mending things and making memories together. Open to all students, faculty, staff and community members.

Apply now to be a fixer!

Note: Student volunteers will be recognized through the Co-Curricular Record Program.

What can I bring to be repaired?

The type of repairs offered at a Repair Café depends on the skills of the volunteers present that day, but typically will include:

  • Electronics: Computers, cellphones, and other electronics.
  • Small appliances: Fans, blenders, microwaves, and other small household appliances.
  • Clothing: Clothes or textiles that need mending, broken zippers etc.
  • Jewelry: Broken clasps, watches, etc.
  • Bicycles
  • Other household items: Broken chairs, picture frames, toys, clocks, and other general household items.
