Welcome back to your next school year! And welcome back another installment of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Hopefully you can find your way into the city for the festival, but we've also got your back here at the Library!

Many TIFF movies over the years are available to library users through Audio Cine, Criterion, and Kanopy. Below is a small selection from the last few years for your consideration.

Happy Viewing!

 12 Years A Slave

 2013

 Steve McQueen

“It's far from comfortable viewing, but 12 Years a Slave's unflinchingly brutal look at American slavery is also brilliant -- and quite possibly essential -- cinema.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

 Ninth Floor

 2015

 Mina Shum

“Director Mina Shum makes her foray into feature documentary by reopening the file on a watershed moment in Canadian race relations – the infamous Sir George Williams Riot. Over four decades after a group of Caribbean students accused their professor of racism, triggering an explosive student uprising, Shum locates the protagonists and listens as they set the record straight, trying to make peace with the past.” (National Film Board of Canada)

 La La Land

 2016

 Damien Chazelle

La La Land breathes new life into a bygone genre with thrillingly assured direction, powerful performances, and an irresistible excess of heart.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

 The Shape of Water

 2017

 Guillermo del Toro

The Shape of Water finds Guillermo del Toro at his visually distinctive best -- and matched by an emotionally absorbing story brought to life by a stellar Sally Hawkins performance.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

 Free Solo

 2018

Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin

Free Solo depicts athletic feats that many viewers will find beyond reason - and grounds the attempts in passions that are all but universal.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

 Knives Out

 2019

 Rian Johnson

Knives Out sharpens old murder-mystery tropes with a keenly assembled suspense outing that makes brilliant use of writer-director Rian Johnson's stellar ensemble.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

 2019

 Céline Sciamma

“A singularly rich period piece, Portrait of a Lady on Fire finds stirring, thought-provoking drama within a powerfully acted romance.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

 Beans

 2020

 Tracey Deer

Beans opens a compelling window into the indigenous coming-of-age experience -- and serves as an affecting debut for Kiawentiio.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

Nomadland

2020

Chloé Zhao

“A poetic character study on the forgotten and downtrodden, Nomadland beautifully captures the restlessness left in the wake of the Great Recession.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

 Banshees of Inisherin

 2022

 Martin McDonagh

“Featuring some of Martin McDonagh's finest work and a pair of outstanding lead performances, The Banshees of Inisherin is a finely crafted feel-bad treat.” (Rotten Tomatoes)
