Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)

What is Critical GenAI Literacy?

What follows below and in the next tab is some guidance on using Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) platforms, but also some crucial information to keep in mind when engaging with an GenAI platforms. GenAI platforms are not without problems, such as their potential to reify marginalization of people and communities through training data biases or environmental impacts on the planet because of the extraordinary level of resources required to run these platforms. Engaging with GenAI thoughtfully, reflectively, and critically - by understanding the benefits and also the harms of GenAI - is what fostering Critical GenAI Literacy is about.

If you want to learn more deeply about what Critical GenAI Literacy means, check out the Library's module AI, Algorithms & You:

  • Humber Students: Look for the module in your Blackboard course sites, or access the module by visiting AI, Algorithms & You.
  • University of Guelph-Humber Students: Follow the self-enrolment guide to access the module via the Self-Registration menu in CourseLink.

Use Cases for GenAIs

Before making use of GenAI, always check your institution's (School, Employer, etc.) policy on the use of GenAI for guidance. That said, GenAI platforms can be used in a variety of ways including (but not limited to):

  • Brainstorming and idea generation
  • To help edit with email drafts
  • As a place to start learning about a topic you have little background knowledge on
  • Generating outlines
  • Writing or summarizing
  • Creating a list of references
  • Translating text to another language
  • Explaining and clarifying concepts
  • Citing information sources in APA 7th style
