Research Starting Points
Before jumping into a search or approaching the research help desk – take a moment to think about the topic you want to learn about. Good research starts with a research question!
- What do you already KNOW about your topic?
- What do you need to FIND OUT about your topic?
Create a question or statement that describes what you want to know about your topic. Try to use words like who, what, when, where, why, and how?
Your research question is a great starting point – it will offer you some keywords that can be used to start your search for information using the library’s Page 1+ search tool (http://library.humber.ca) or you can visit the library and share your research question with the Research Help Desk staff.

Humber Libraries' Page 1+ search is a broad, multidisciplinary search tool - think of it as a "Google" search for the library.
With Page 1+ you can:
- Search for books, articles and more all from the same search box;
- Search a wide range of article databases from one place;
- Filter your results by content type, library location, subject terms or date;
- Easily limit your searches to full-text articles or peer-reviewed journals.
